Sagbama Local Government Area Retains Foundation Football Tournament Trophy
The Sagbama Local Government Area team has emerged victorious in the 2023 edition of the Joe Penawou football tournament, defeating host team Akugbene 2-1 in the final match.
As defending champions, the Bayelsans successfully retained the trophy and took home a cash prize of N1.5 million. Akugbene received N1 million for their second-place finish, while Bomadi Local Government Area secured N500,000 as second runners-up.
The tournament, which took place from March 25 to April 8, featured 10 teams from Delta and Bayelsa States. It was sponsored by the Joe Penawou Foundation, an initiative aimed at promoting grassroots football and reducing youth restiveness, drug abuse, and militancy in the Niger Delta region.
Notable dignitaries in attendance at the final ceremony included former Super Eagles striker and coach Samson Siasia, representatives from the Bayelsa and Delta State Governments, and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
